Most people first meet the monks and the secular believers of the Kṛṣṇa faith outside the temples. The most common example of this is when someone comes into contact with the preaching book distributors in public spaces.
Donations received for books support the maintenance of the church activities and the charitable work.
The distribution of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books is one of the main pillars of the Kṛṣṇa-conscious organization, both spiritually and materially. Smaller books such as The Path of Perfection, The Nectar of Teachings, The Science of Self-Realization, or the Teachings of Srī Caitanya are summary and informative books on the basic philosophy and historicity of the Kṛṣṇa Faith — in the beginning, when one starting to become familiar with our philosophy, it is worth to start with the reading of these books.
Believers also sell translations of ancient Sanskrit scriptures translated into English by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who provided philosophical and practical explanations also. These are already deeper and larger books, and the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness can be learned in great detail from them. Examples of such works are the Bhagavad-gītā and the Twelve Cantos of the Srīmad-Bhāgavatam.
